Sandstone head of Akhenaten

Sandstone head of Akhenaten

Sandstone head of Akhenaten. He is noted for abandoning traditional Egyptian polytheism and introducing worship centered on the Aten. For most of the population, the god Aten was approachable only through the pharaoh and, to a lesser extent, through Queen Nefertiti. Innovations in art emerged, with Akhenaten and his family at the center. Art became more of a caricature of reality. Akhenaten and his family were portrayed with limp, overly long arms and legs, long necks, long narrow heads, pronounced lips and almond-shaped eyes.
